Canada unity convoy

Trudeau invoked the never-before-used Emergencies Act. It endowed the executive more authority, including freezing of accounts without a court order for those accused of supporting the blockades. For those already distrustful of the government, the invocation sealed their opinions that Mr. Trudeau is anti-democratic. The use of the act is controversial well beyond the convoy itself — part of the reason Mr.
Trudeau rescinded it Wednesday, just days after the House of Commons approved it. On the one hand, moving forward requires understanding some of the driving issues behind the protest. They are also overrepresented strongly in under Canada. Graves says. On the other hand, the protest was not just composed of Canadians tired of strict pandemic public health measures, though it garnered significant international attention at a time when global fatigue with the pandemic is widespread.
Is it a peaceful protest if it costs billions in international trade due to blockades at the border and in lost wages? Many Ottawa businesses had to shut down including an entire downtown mall. France, for example, is a country known for its boisterous striking, but there, protesters strike a balance between stating their message and maintaining approval.
Kaler says. Many Canadians continue to maintain that at the core of this movement is a radical element promulgating misinformation and hate that appeals to more Canadians than the country has ever realized. Even she was surprised by the scale of it. She weighed in on the subject via social media, and received more personal attacks than ever; so has Ms. Li, who says she has received threatening calls and emails accusing her of being a mole for the Chinese Communist Party.
At the same time, Dr. This debate is not split down the middle. There is a very loud, angry group, she adds. Monitor journalism changes lives because we open that too-small box that most people think they live in.
We believe news can and should expand a sense of identity and possibility beyond narrow conventional expectations. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. But you know what? We change lives.
We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. And we can prove it. Social media and news footage showed trucks and companion vehicles snaking along highways, cheered on by people gathered on roadsides and overpasses, often waving Canadian flags and signs disparaging Mr Trudeau.
The unusual protest even caught the attention of people outside Canada’s borders, with podcaster Joe Rogan, Donald Trump Jr – the son of the former US president – and British comedian Russell Brand showing support. The protesters plan to stay in downtown Ottawa near Parliament Hill for at least the weekend, and their demands have grown from reversing the border vaccine mandate to ending all such mandates nationwide. The convoy has been peaceful as it passed through Canadian towns and cities, and Ottawa police have said they’re in touch with organisers, who’ve been cooperative.
But police say they are concerned about how the convoy has attracted extremist rhetoric, and some far-right groups have suggested they might also head to Ottawa. He said that police are preparing for potential parallel and counter-demonstrations and were concerned about people on social media in Canada and abroad „who may or may not come to the city“ but „who are nonetheless inciting hate, violence and in some cases criminality“. Organisers have called out fringe elements, urging participants to report any misbehaviour.
Mr Jonker also said extremists would not be welcome. Police have urged locals to avoid the gridlocked downtown core. Thousands of vehicles and participants are expected for a weekend of planned demonstrations and on Saturday the streets were crowded with vehicles and people gathering near Parliament Hill. Realistically, in our democracy, protest is certainly a part of the process. So too are elections. One may, or may not like the results of the election.
However each political party put forward their platform, presented their candidates, and shared their stand s on the issues and the voters decided. It is the system of government Canada has had since Confederation. Thank you for choosing to take part in this unprecedented Nationwide movement. Canada Unity represents and defends a coalition of Concerned Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents, Indigenous Communities, Employers, Employees from private and government bodies, Institutions and Businesses at large.

Each faces the same single existential decision in regard to the brand of outlying conservative populism that announces itself with a horn: a Let the outliers into the big tent, and watch the Conservatives be excoriated in the media as Canada’s answer to Trumpism, or b cast them out, and send them fleeing to the People’s Party, which will then siphon off support on the Conservatives’ right flank.

This is a country that neither needs, nor wants Trumpism. It’s a country that needs respectful protests, positive actions, much better leadership and appreciation of its heroes.
